Mrterupt Falls Again Where Does Alexia Meet the High Schooler
Hi!
Mr. Terupt Falls Again by Rob Buyea
Summary: Fifth-grade was full of unforgettable events for Mr. Terupt and his class at Snow Hill School. Seven students were particularly affected by Mr. Terupt. Now those seven students are back, and they've been granted the rare opportunity to send one more year with their beloved teacher before they graduate from elementary school. Peter's parents expect him to attend private school after sixth-grade, but Peter has plans to stay right where he is. Eager to grow up, Alexia gets in over her head with some older kids. Danielle suspects that her family is keeping a secret from her, and she's determined to find out what it is. Jeffrey makes a life-changing discovery. Curious about her teacher's past, Jessica uncovers startling details about Mr. Terupt. Anna finally decides she's ready for the truth about her absent dad. And Luke's keen observations lead to questions with unexpected answers. It's a roller coaster of a year as Mr. Terupt helps his students be the best they can be—and enlists their help to pull off an extra-special project. But will there be a happy ending for all?

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed Because of Mr. Terupt, and I was excited to see where Rob Buyea would go with the sequel. The characters are what really makes both of his novels – their development, their relationships, and their personalities, and I think the sequel did a good job living up to the first book. Was it my absolute favorite book in the world? No, because that is a pretty high honor for the most outstanding of books :) But, for a solid middle grade read, I would be happy to recommend both Mr. Terupt novels!
The seven students, as well as Mr. Terupt, are all moving up to sixth grade, and that brings a lot of changes. Worries about moving on to junior high are starting to form, peer pressure is even greater, and major events are happening in everyone's lives. What I really liked about this book was how well the author handled a lot of difficult topics thrown into the plot. To the intended audience {ten to twelve-year olds} the topics are relevant. There's budding romance, growing up, and pressure from older kids. Readers may not have encountered these issues themselves, but I think even reading about the characters dealing with it is such a good idea. However, I do think that Mr. Terupt's helpfulness, for lack of a better word, was a little forced. He was always there to save the day, and as another reviewer put it, his superhero qualities were a bit over-the-top. I would have loved to have seen more of the students' choices in those predicaments, only because it would make them that much more developed.
While the author did do a nice job writing about relevant issues, I also have to admit that the story felt a bit dated when it came down to the details. There was not one mention of modern technology, and to sell a story these days, I feel that these minor things can become important. While some may argue that this makes the book timeless, I think that at the same time, it makes you wonder if some kids will lose interest because they can't connect with the characters' lives. My nit-picking aside, the points of view in this novel were extremely well-done! I loved that you could immediately tell who was speaking just from the tone of writing. The storyline was really adorable, but there were also some shocks in there as well, just to keep you on your toes :)
Overall,Mr. Terupt Falls Again was a good book. A very nice follow-up to a successful debut, and I would definitely pick up the third one!
Pros: Well-developed characters and nicely thought-out storyline.
Cons: The book, at times, felt a bit dated.
Heads Up: One of the characters, Lexie, hangs out with some not-so-nice older kids, but it ends positively, and showcases the right thing to do in the end!
Overall: I give it 3 1/2 stars {*** 1/2} and I recommend it for ages 11 and up.
Have a lovely night, friends!
